Description
Mabamba bay is a large wetland on the shores of Lake Victoria, sited on 2424 hectares of papyrus, ferns, water lilies, and grasses in the shallow water. This wetland found in Kasanje town council, Ziba village in Wakiso district is a home for many endemic water birds and a place to find the endangered shoebill stork, which is a rare bird to find. Mabamba is an important birding and bio-diversity area that was launched as a Ramsar site in 2006, the accessibility of Mabamba makes it the beginning and the ending of tourism.
Itinerary
Day programme:
You will be picked from your hotel at 6:30 am to start the journey, it will take at least one and a half hours to get to the famous Mabamba bay, on arrival to the place you will get prepared for the canoe ride experience that will sail you through the papyrus swamp take you to the right spot of your bird watching experience which takes almost one and a half hours. While doing your birding you will see a lot of bird species that are accommodated by this wetland, for example:- Shoebill stork, African Jacana, Purple Heron, Black Kite, African Fish Eagle, Pied and Malachite Kingfisher, Yellow-billed Duck, White-faced Whistling Duck, Cattle Egret, Long-toed Lapwing, Spur-winged Lapwing, Papyrus Gonolek, Hammerkop, Black-winged Stilt, Common and Wood Sandpiper, and many more others.
After the first morning bird watching, you will have lunch then you will take another round of bird watching or an optional bike village tour, and experience the lifestyle of the local people and their cultural heritages and backgrounds in the area. Late in the evening leave for Kampala to your hotel. 49
